Big, bigger, biggest. According to Wikipedia, Sölden, with an area of 466.78 km² and about 3145 inhabitants, is the largest municipality in Austria. Of the 466.78 km², about 146 km² are covered by glaciers, 321 km² by peaks, alpine pastures and forests, and the remaining 1 km² are built-up areas. The world-famous ski resort is located in the southern part of the Ötztal valley at an altitude of 1368 metres. With two glaciers (Rettenbach Glacier and Tiefenbach Glacier) that are guaranteed snow, Sölden is one of the most visited ski regions in Austria. According to information, the town has more than 15,000 guest beds and registers more than two million overnight stays per year.
As many ski enthusiasts follow live, the Ski World Cup begins every October in Sölden. The first races of the winter season take place at the Rettenbach Glacier. Despite the rush of guests, the journey from Innsbruck airport to Sölden usually takes about 70 minutes and feels much shorter in one of our modern Mercedes taxi cars. Especially the journey from the airport in Innsbruck runs without difficulties and simplifies the holiday start enormously. As usual, our taxi driver will be noticed with an unobtrusive sign with your name and will take care of the safe arrival at your accommodation in Sölden.
A further characteristic of Sölden are the buildings built in the traditional Tyrolean style. The village has several comfortable hotels and is very snow-sure due to the two glaciers (Rettenbachgletscher and Tiefenbachgletscher). In addition, the winter resort has very extensive snow-making facilities at its disposal. With an impressive height of 3,249 metres, the Otztal Arena impresses guests from all over the world. Tobogganers are also very welcome in Sölden. The village includes several toboggan runs, some of which are open until late in the evening. Worth mentioning is also the thermal bath Aqua Dome, which is located in Längenfeld, 15 bus minutes away.
Coming over the Alpenhautptkamm, the alpine pastures of the rear Ötztal valley were visited by hunters and shepherds as early as the Stone Age. The discovery of the Ötzi, the hunter from the Neolithic period (a glacier mummy from the late Neolithic or Copper Stone Age, which was found in 1991 in the Ötztal Alps (South Tyrol)), is considered proof of this. Gradually the area was settled and several settlements were established.
The name Sölden was derived from the word “selda” and means as much as “smallest rural property size”. From 1166/67 in the chronicle of the Ottobeuren monastery the village was called “seldon” for the first time. Later, due to the labialization, “seldon” was transformed into Sölden. Today’s Sölden as we know it developed for the first time between 1288 and 1370 AD from the original farms Berghof, Haimbach, Lochlehn, Pitze, Kaiser, Leite, Rechenau, Rettenbach, Schmiedhof, Wald, Wohlfahrt and Windau. In 1923 the remaining part of the municipality of Schnals was transferred to the municipality of Sölden. From the early 30’s the change began gradually – from trade with cattle to a tourist area. The right expansion into a winter sports centre began in 1948 with the first lifts, followed by the development of the Rettenbach and Tiefenbach glacier in 1975 and 1981.
