Königsleiten lies on the Gerlos Pass and is a village in the municipality of Wald im Pinzgau in Salzburg Land in the district of Zell am See in Austria. Königsleiten is thus the westernmost part of the municipality of Wald im Pinzgau. Further to the west and south is the province of Tyrol with the municipality of Gerlos. As a winter and summer holiday destination for many guests, above all from all over Europe, the Zillertal Arena ski area in Tyrol, with its guaranteed snow, offers winter fun up to 2,500 metres above sea level.
As part of the Zillertal Arena, Königsleiten offers ultra-modern cable cars, enabling guests to safely transport themselves to their favourite ski slopes. Here you can enjoy winter sports on an unbeatable variety of slopes and enjoy spending time with friends and family. The ski area in particular is equipped with free WLAN hotspots and offers photo hungry people several photo points. The Arena Coaster in the immediate vicinity or a ride on the 7 km long Gerlosstein toboggan run is also a delight.
The journey to Königsleiten is quite uncomplicated and is a real pleasure, especially with Travel-Taxi Innsbruck. In the 1960s there were only a few alpine huts in the current Königsleiten ski area until the beginning of the 1970s, when Stefan Kruckenhauser, the so-called “Skipapst vom Arlberg”, said the following about the region around the Gerlos Pass: “the area is extraordinarily attractive for winter sports, but unfortunately a region without a people”.
The then mayor of Wald im Pinzgau, Melchior Stöckl, and the municipal secretary, Alois Hölzl, took Stefan Kruckenhauser’s words as an opportunity and, in close cooperation with the Salzburg provincial government, drew up a development plan for the area. The holiday village around Königsleiten with its alpine village character was built in 1962.
Later, the structural conditions for the winter sports development were secured. This was the starting signal for the construction of several pistes and lifts around Königsleiten. In the years to come, further ski lifts (2-seater chair lift, Hochalmkar and Mitterleger T-bar lifts) and other structures were built. Due to its snow safety and the demanding pistes, ski races of the Austrian Ski Association (European Cup) were even held in Königsleiten in the following years. Königsleiten grew steadily and developed into one of the most popular ski areas in Austria, especially in the last two decades.
